Lavandula is a member of the mint family. French lavender is the most widely cultivated species, and it is often called the ‘butterfly plant’ due to the tips of the lavender.
Lavender was used in ancient cultures for medicinal purposes. Dioscorides, an ancient Greek physician, believed that eating lavender would relieve indigestion, sore throats, and headaches. Lavender also appears to have been used in the mummification process of ancient Egyptians. It was also found in bath houses in ancient Rome. In fact, the Latin verb for ‘to wash’ is lavare.
Today, there is evidence some of our forebearers may have had the right idea about lavender and our nervous systems. Recent evidence may suggest that lavender can help you get a better night’s sleep. No wonder Charles VI used to sleep on a pillow stuffed with lavender!
Garden pick: We love the Les Lavandes de Nestor candle. Inspired by a recipe discovered in our founder, Joséphine Mouranchon’s, grimoire, this gorgeous mineral wax candle will transport you to the lavender fields of Provence with a warm glow.
Rosemary is native to the Mediterranean and it is also member of the mint family. This evergreen perennial plant derives from the Latin ‘ros’ and ‘marinus’ that taken together are translated to ‘dew of the sea.’
While most of us tend to associate rosemary with cooking, ancient records indicate rosemary was used in many ceremonies. Rosemary was one of the few items placed on top of an Egyptian sarcophagus. Ancient Greek scholars wore wreaths made of rosemary around their heads to help with their memory and recall. Rosemary was also used to create Napoleon Bonaparte’s own eau de cologne.
Modern laboratory studies show that rosemary is rich in antioxidants. It is also a source for iron, calcium, and vitamin B6. Notably, rosemary contains carnosic acid, which may help to fight off the damage of free radicals in your brain.
Garden pick: You will fall in love with Belle de Provence olive and rosemary fragrance diffuser. This gorgeous herbal scent will bring you closer to nature, and encourage alertness and mindfulness.
Mentha is genus plant from the mint family that has a wide variety of species from spearmint to peppermint. It is a very commonly grown and it is an extremely popular aromatic herb for its taste.
The ancient Egyptian Ebers Papyrus, one of the oldest surviving medical texts in the world, recommends mint for digestive and as a tool to soothe flatulence. Ancient Greeks and Romans used mint during funeral rites to scent the body. The mint plant was also popular in early modern Europe as juice from the herb was believed to be effective against poisons.
Nowadays, mint is a major player in our daily oral hygiene as it can help clear plaque deposit from our teeth. Mint is also favoured in aromatherapy for its strong and refreshing smell that can help rejuvenate your mind while bringing a comforting sense of familiarity.
Garden pick: Make the Maître Savonitto exfoliating peppermint and green tea soap a part of your daily routine. This artisanal soap manufactured in Atelier du Savon is enriched with argan oil and heather flowers for a gentle exfoliation to leave your skin feeling soft.
Verbena, also called vervain or simpler’s joy, is a hardy herbaceous perennial plant. It has flowers that bloom and range from blue to purple or white in colour depending on the species. Lemon verbena has a bright, citrus smell.
Originally native to the Americas, lemon verbena was used by the Aztecs as a remedy for headaches, insomnia, and circulatory problems. Vervain was referred to as a ‘holy herb’ by the ancient Greeks and Romans. In the Middles Ages, verbena was a commonly prescribed cure for practically all ailments.
Verbena tea remains popular today as it is a great natural sleeping aid. The stems of verbena contain an herbal hormone that acts as an anti-inflammatory, which helps to calm the nerves and encourage sleep.
Garden pick: Enjoy a soothing hot bath and treat yourself to our Authentique verbena bath salts. Perfect for relieving aching muscles, these luxury salts will leave you feeling calm and refreshed.

Think of perfume notes as the ingredients in a perfume recipe. This unique combination of notes creates the basic character of a fragrance. Every note is carefully selected by the perfumer in order to evoke a specific experience or sensation.
The fragrance pyramid breaks up each note into three basic categories. These categories are top notes, heart notes, and base notes. The pyramid is divided into these three categories that correspond with the evaporation and wear of the fragrance, which captures the unique experience of each perfume.
Top notes are the initial scents that draw you into a new fragrance. They provide the initial spark and give the first impression of the perfume. They tend to be comprised of smaller molecules meaning that they evaporate first, and then seamlessly transition into the next layer of the fragrance. Top notes can also be called head notes.
Top notes are meant to catch our attention and therefore tend to be lighter. Their role is to introduce us and open the fragrance. Popular top notes include citruses like lemon or bergamot, as well as florals like rose and lavender.
As the name suggests, heart notes compose the ‘heart’ or main character of the perfume. These notes heighten the experience of the top notes by introducing us to new components to capture our senses. Heart notes are full-bodied, rounder, and denser. They tend to comprise the majority of a perfume, while ultimately acting as a buffer for the final base notes.
Heart notes can also be called middle notes. Some common heart notes include cardamon, jasmine, black pepper, and cinnamon.
What are base notes?
In tandem with the heart notes, base notes form the foundation of a perfume. They are very rich and smooth. Base notes become evident after at least half an hour of wearing a fragrance. These notes work with the heart notes to create a full-bodied fragrance. They are also the long-lasting of all the fragrance notes and leave you with a final scent. Therefore, base notes provide a lasting impression by adding depth as the scent lingers on your skin.
Common base notes include cedarwood, patchouli, vanilla, and musk.
What are the fragrance notes in your go-to perfume?
]]>Working late? Do you have an important meeting coming up that you can’t stop going over in your head? Replaying that embarrassing interaction that you had in the school parking lot? Even if we are exhausted and can’t wait for bed, these thoughts are often still running through our minds and can keep us from being able to fall sleep. In fact, repetitive thoughts or ruminating can impair your ability to think and process emotions. So what can we do?
One of the best strategies is simply to give yourself some space. Distract yourself. Watch an episode of that new television series you have been hearing so much about. Read a chapter of a new book. Take a bath with some gorgeous Lothantique bath salts to ease your aching muscles and listen to a podcast or a soothing playlist. If you can, go take a walk around the block early in the evening. Clear your head.
Self-care may seem like a buzzword, but it is also incredibly essential. Paying attention to your body can also be a helpful tool to bring a sense of peace to your mind. Take the time to treat yourself with a nourishing night cream enriched with Dead Sea minerals, shea butter, aloe vera, jojoba and rose oil. Dead Sea Land’s unique formula oxygen supply to skin cell to help soften and smooth skin. Go to feeling great in your skin and reset your mindset.
Your space can have a huge impact on your ability to relax. However, instead of a total bedroom design overhaul, there are so many little things you can do to help create a more calming environment to rest in.
First, keep your space tidy. A clean space won’t overwhelm your senses and it is less stressful to be in. Decluttering can also be a great way to refocus. Toss your rings into a gorgeous marble dish and arrange your dresser to feel organized as opposed to chaotic.
Your space should also smell fresh. Be sure to light your favourite candle or place a fragrance diffuser on a nearby shelf. Our memories are tied closely to scents so picking a candle that reminds you of walking through the forest or your most recent vacation can make all the difference. A calming fragrance may help put you in the right state of mind to drift off to sleep.
Don’t forget that a fresh pillowcase is also important. If don’t have time to throw your pillowcase in the wash, use a pillow mist instead. A pillow mist will quickly freshen your beddings and linen for a more relaxing sleep. Fragrances like lavender may also help to increase deep sleep and reduce your likelihood of waking throughout the night. Most importantly, a consistent scent that you associate with bed can trigger a routine response in your body to fall asleep.
Creating a routine is one thing, but sticking with it can be difficult. Our lives are often shaken up by new work deadlines, parties, or relationships. However, one late night or skipped facial cleanse doesn’t mean you should throw in the towel altogether.
One of the best ways to stick to your bedtime routine is to make it enjoyable. We love to indulge. Don’t just slap on some hand cream. Buy something that you really love and look forward to using like our bestselling Lothantique hand creams. Made with twenty-percent shea butter, our conveniently sized hand creams are luxurious, silky, and gentle on dry skin (plus, they look great on your nightstand).
Another tip? If you don’t fall asleep within 20 minutes of going to bed, leave your bedroom, and do something else to relax. Turn on some music. Avoid your phone. Give your room a quick spritz with a room spray to transform and shake up your mind frame. Go back to bed when you feel tired again.

Donkey milk is the milk from a domesticated female donkey also known as a jenny. Donkey milk production is also quite different to other conventional dairy processes as a jenny has a low gland capacity and can give approximately half a litre of milk per day. Thus, most donkey farms are quite small with typically no more than ten donkeys.
Meanwhile, goat milk is the milk from domesticated goats, and it is the most commonly consumed dairy around the world. It has more protein than other milks, which makes it easier for most people to digest. As it is more digestible, it can also help to improve nutrient deficiencies. It is also rich in calcium, vitamin A, fatty acids, and decreases bad cholesterol.
Donkey milk is also very similar to human milk in its lactose, minerals, proteins, and amino-acid contents. In fact, it was used as a replacement substance to feed orphan babies in the early 19th century and it is still used today as a hypoallergenic alternative formula.
It is also lower in fat, and it has more vitamin D than other milks. The whey protein is well-known for its antimicrobial properties, which contains compounds that can prevent the growth of bacteria and viruses. These compounds may also help to improve the immune system by releasing cytokines (particularly for elderly people).
Donkey milk and goat milk have been used for both medicinal and cosmetic purposes for thousands of years. Famously, Queen Cleopatra regularly took baths in donkey milk to maintain the vitality of her beautiful skin. Historic records show Cleopatra was not alone in this beauty trend as donkey milk was used often by ancient Egyptians to revitalize the skin.
In ancient Greece, Hippocrates believed in the medicinal benefits of donkey milk, and it was prescribed to treat many conditions from poisoning and fevers, to healing wounds and nose bleeds. Pliny the Elder also wrote about donkey milk as a remedy to fight fevers, reduce wrinkles, and to treat fatigue in his work, Naturalis Historia, during the Roman era.
Elizabeth I, Queen of England, was supposedly a fan of soaking in goat’s milk. In fact, reportedly, goat milk is also the reason European milkmaids gained a reputation for their clear complexions. Pauline Bonaparte, Napoleon’s sister, like many royals, was also said to have used donkey milk in her own skincare routine.
The benefits of donkey milk continued to be studied in the Renaissance by the likes of Georges-Louis Leclerc the Comte de Buffon, a French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist.
Today, donkey milk remains popular in the cosmetic industry as it is both gentle and soothing, which makes it ideal for all skin types. It is rich in anti-inflammatory properties including lactic acid, which is a naturally purifying agent. It acts as a gentle exfoliant and stimulates cell renewal for healthier looking skin.
Goat milk has the same pH levels as human skin. This means a cleansing soap with goat milk does not disturb the skin’s natural acid mantle making it perfect for sensitive skin. It is also high in lactic acid, which helps your skin to retain moisture and look smoother.
Donkey milk can also be a great anti-aging skincare tool as it is rich in amino acids, vitamin C, and calcium. They can help to boost collagen and elastin to help maintain a youthful look. Donkey milk can help to keep your skin healthy, soft, and hydrated—making it a beauty secret for the ages.

]]>Research has shown that vibrant colours tend to have a more arousing effect on our minds. Meanwhile, cooler colours have a more calming effect. Neutral colours in an interior design can instantly help make a space feel both larger and more relaxing.
However, this doesn’t mean you have to live in a dog’s world and paint everything gray. Instead, add subtle pops of colour to create a more dynamic space. Blue can be a peaceful and gentle colour especially in a softer shade. Green is a restful and quiet colour. It also symbolizes nature, which can leave us feeling refreshed. Or experiment with a splash of pink, which according to Feng Shui, can soothe energies in a space and encourages individuals to care for themselves. Have fun and experiment with a colour combination that works for you.
Being in nature can significantly improve our wellbeing by improving our emotional state, helping our concentration, and reducing stress. You can encourage a similar effect by bringing these natural elements inside as well. Add lots of plants and greenery to your space. If you don’t have a green thumb then try a lower maintenance plant such as a snake plant, spider plant, aloe vera or peace lily.
You can also play with natural textures like wood, stone, and marble. We adore marble for its warm, authentic, and timeless look that cannot be beat. Add a luxurious accent to your room with a gorgeous marble bijou bowl or marble tray.
Clutter can feel like chaos. To make a more calming space, it is important to be mindful and stay organized. Choose your décor and accessories with intention. Don’t overwhelm your space. Pick a statement art piece and resist the urge to cover your shelves in endless trinkets. Select objects with meaning or choose fun sculptural pieces for more impact.
Organize umbrellas, blankets, magazine and more in a Tadé basket. Functional can also be beautiful, and these recycled tire baskets look great while also being eco-friendly. These artisan-made baskets are a great conversation starter and a versatile organizer.
There can be a lot of subtle power in a scent. Aromatherapy can be a useful tool to change your mood and alleviate anxiety. Choosing the right fragrance can be a great way to set the tone for guests or transform a space. A fragrance diffuser is a great way to consistently disperse a scent while being an aesthetic edition to any counter space or shelf.
Lavender is an earthy and classic scent, which can have a calming effect and improve your sleep. Citrus scents like lemon and orange can also be useful in lifting moods. While scents like rosemary can help to improve concentration and boost alertness to add some pep to your day. Find a scent that works for you and your space.

]]>Protecting your skin from harmful sunlight is key to a healthy summer glow so don’t skip your sunscreen and reapply often. Sunscreen filters ultraviolet radiation. UV-B can result in a tan or burn. UV-A can cause premature aging of the skin and may lead to cancer. Even ancient societies used plant extracts to create a barrier on the skin to help protect their skin.
Your skin is made up of three layers. The top layer is your epidermis. It has stacked layers of cells. Your older cells will eventually die and fall off by rising to the top of the cells. Your strateum corneum is made up of these dead skin cells, and may affect your appearance if the water content of all the layers below are low. Repairing your skin’s barrier is key.
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. Oxidative stress, when a disturbance causes your electrons to attack healthy cells, is caused by pollutants and environmental aggressors like UV rays. Adding vitamin C into your skincare routine can help combat some of this oxidative stress. It helps to fight inflammation and sun damage. The Dead Sea Land Day Cream is enriched with Vitamins A, C, E, and B5, as well as Dead Sea minerals, shea butter, and aloe vera. This facial cream is high in vitamins and minerals, which protects your skin from the elements, leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth.
Looking for another great natural skin defense? Check out the algue velours sorbet cream from Compagnie de Provence. Seaweed from the Mediterranean is rich in minerals and amino acids, providing a long-lasting moisturizer (up to 48 hours) while helping to restore the barrier function of your skin.
The golden rule: stay hydrated. It is essential that you drink two litres of water a day especially as we sweat more in warmer weather. Sweating is your body’s way of regulating your temperature and cooling your skin. However, your sweat is mostly water (and some salts), which dehydrates you even as it cools your body.
Moisturizer is an integral part of any skincare routine all year long so don’t skip it just because you're feeling a little oilier. Moisturizing helps to maintain your outer layer of skin, which is your first defense against pollutants and irritation. However, you may want avoid heavy creams and opt for a moisturizer that feels light on your skin instead like Lothantique's line of hand and body lotion. It is vegetable based, paraben-free hand, and enriched with linseed, sesame, jojoba oils and cotton seed extract, which absorbs quickly leaving skin supple and moisturized.
With the dawn of flip-flop and sandal season, digging in the garden or playing in the sand – your hands and feet are being exposed to even more environmental aggravators than usual. On top of being more exposed, your hands and feet can also play a key role in your mobility. Cracks, cuts, and callouses on your feet hurt. Plus, having dry hands can be extremely itchy or even painful.
Truth be told, your hands are exposed to just as many elements as your face. Yet we often neglect them and leave our hands vulnerable to the effects of aging like premature wrinkles and pigmentation. In fact, the skin on our hands is often the most delicate (and thin). Carrying around a convenient and perfectly sized hand cream from Lothantique can provide a quick fix. This thick, ultra-rich hand cream is ideal to travel with or keep (several) in your purse. Besides, you’ll be the most popular person at brunch when everyone asks to borrow some lotion.
Applying a cream like the intensive foot cream from Dead Sea Land can also make the world of a difference. Made with minerals from the Dead Sea, cocoa butter, and coconut oil, this foot cream is great to soften dry, tough skin. Use a generous amount on your feet and ankles and massage until fully absorbed.
Any dermatologist will caution you against over-exfoliating, but skipping exfoliation entirely during the summer months isn’t the best solution (especially if you have oily skin). But exfoliation does increase sun sensitivity. This means it is important to create an exfoliation schedule for yourself during the summer. For instance, try not to exfoliate the day before you plan to sunbathe at the beach as you might weaken your skin’s barrier defenses. Instead, exfoliate once or twice a week, ideally earlier in the week at nighttime, to remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores.
You should also avoid any harsher chemical exfoliates during the summer. Opt for gentle scrubs and use a brush or belt where you can control pressure to avoid irritating sensitive skin. Try the Belle de Provence natural soap bag, which holds your soap while the jute material buffs away dead skin cells and stimulates blood circulation.
What are your plans for the summer?

]]>Is spring cleaning an annual guilt trip? Or is it a biological reaction to the change in seasons? Experts are inclined to the latter. During the winter, people are exposed to less sunlight so our pineal gland produces more melatonin to compensate. Melatonin also makes us sleepier. As the days get longer and the weather warms, most of us feel a burst of energy, which springs us into action quite literally. Simply, we may be more likely to accept a little mess in the winter when we are already tired, but the sun spurs us to start tidying up.
Plus, spring cleaning isn’t a new tradition.
There are also many cultural examples of spring cleaning. In Iran, Nowruz (Persian New Year) typically coincides with spring equinox. Two weeks before Nowruz, there is the tradition of khane tekani, which translates to ‘shaking down the house.’ As the name suggests, it requires a very thorough cleaning in order to renew the home. Once the house has been cleaned and sorted, fresh flowers are brought in to help welcome the new year.
A similar ideology can be found with Lunar New Year, where the home is thoroughly cleaned in preparation to bring good fortune. After the house is cleaned, you cannot sweep for a few days so as to not brush away any good fortunes that may have been brought with the new year.
Likewise, during Passover, Jewish people remove any leavened bread from their homes, which often requires a good clean to make sure every last crumb is gone.
Of course, the origin of spring cleaning might be far more practical than any tradition or religion. Homes were once lit with whale oil or keroscene, and warmed by burning wood or coal. After the winter months, there would be a layer or soot and grime in every room. Barbara Clark Smith, curator at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, points out that you can’t effectively clean in winter, whereas warmer weather provided the opportunity to really clean.
So while most of us aren’t burning coal anymore, the habit seems to have stuck.
It may sound like a no-brainer, but the first step of your spring-cleaning process should always be a list. Spring cleaning can feel like a massive overhaul that is often pitched as a fresh start, but it can also be overwhelming. A list is a great way to prioritize your tasks, and to break them down into simple, smaller tasks to feel like you are making some actual progress packing away your winter closet.
We find it more satisfying to start by sorting our closets and drawers. Go through your clothes, makeup, or even the dreaded ‘junk drawer,’ and donate or toss items you don’t need and don’t use anymore. Not only will you create more space, but it also gives you a great opportunity to implement a new organizational system.
Keep in mind that functional doesn’t need to be boring. Treat yourself to some new storage containers and baskets to change up your space. Try a recycled carrier basket created by skilled artisans to hold your towels or blankets. Or purchase a stunning marble dish to display your rings or hold your trinkets.
Once you’ve tackled your storage, you can move onto the nitty gritty tasks like laundry, cleaning shelves, windows, curtains, and more. Just don’t forget to put on a great podcast or your favourite playlist as you bust out the rubber gloves and rags.
One of the worst parts of cleaning is the chemical scent left behind by most cleaning products. While effective, they can leave you with a headache and can be a serious impediment to your cleaning progress by requiring you to take multiple breaks. Instead, choose an eco-friendly cleaner like the Compagnie de Provence all-purpose cleaner made with 97% natural ingredients. Or use a classic mix of water and vinegar to tackle your blinds and sinks.
You can also tackle any unpleasant chemical smells after the fact with a fragrant room spray. Or cut down on your cleaning workload by using linen water. Linen water is great for gently scenting your linens and clothing for an instant refresh without another trip to the laundry room.
If spring cleaning is a natural biological response then it makes sense for your fragrance choices to follow the same logic. Even with snow on the ground, we can imagine spring on the horizon and sunnier days by implementing natural and floral scents in our homes. Our new tuberose collection is an earthy and heady white floral – perfect to help you dream of warmer weather.
As we know, fragrances are also extremely personal and can be tied closely to our memories. What better way remind you of your favourite lush trail you walk with your dog or spending all afternoon gardening then with a rose candle or a forest scent? Imagine a summer night sitting around a campfire making smores or sharing a bottle of wine with a warm incensamente or sandalwood fragrance.
Take your influence from Nowruz and Lunar New Year and begin your year as you mean to go on. Give your home a deep scrub, and then spend the next day relaxing. Balance is key. Wait for spring to blossom with a smile on your face, and your winter coat tucked far away in your closet.

Step Two: Cleanse & Exfoliate
It’s time for a deep cleanse. Not unlike a hammam, allow yourself to the enjoy the rituals and stages of bathing. Begin with the Dead Sea Land mineral mud and aloe vera. Made with mud from the Dead Sea itself, it will provide a deep cleanse and remove impurities. Spread generously over your entire body to stimulate and rejuvenate your cells.
Next, hop in the shower and wash off the mud. Then use your sisal belt weave to buff your skin as it helps increase blood circulation, and easily scrub hard to reach places like your back. You can also make use of a pumice stone or sistal sponge on rougher areas like your feet by working in circular motions. Exfoliation is important to stimulate your collagen and keep your skin looking fresh.
Once, you’ve exfoliated you can lather up. Use a bar of traditional French hard-milled soap, a product with techniques that date back over 600 years, to clean your skin. Wash away any sweat, oils, and negative energy from the day before stepping out of the shower.
Step Three: Massage & Bathe
Picturing yourself stepping into another chamber, and as you towel off start running yourself a hot bath. Add some of our luxurious foam bath in tuberose for the perfect bathing experience. Now that you’re cleansed, allow yourself to focus on just relaxing. If you’d like, pull out your marble massage stone as you wait for your tub to fill. Work slowly to help reduce any swelling and increase circulation.
Sink into your bath, close your eyes, and focus on the calming music. Take your time and allow the hot water to get your blood moving, helping to soothe sore or tight muscles after a long day.
Step Four: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
Step out of your bath into your favourite robe. It’s time for our most important step – moisturizing. It is crucial to help reduce dryness and oil build up.
Make use of quality, sustainable French product and lather yourself in a hand and body lotion that is vegetable-based and paraben-free. Don’t be afraid to over do it either - Lothantique creams have a light texture that quickly absorbs to leave the skin feeling great. For extra dry or tough areas like your feet and elbows, try a body butter. Depending on the time of your DIY spa, choose from the Dead Sea Land day or night moisturizing cream to help smooth and soften your face. For some extra care, try their smoothing eye and neck cream for an advanced anti-wrinkle formula to help reduce signs of aging.
Step Five: Lounge with a Book (and a glass of wine)
We’ve attended to your body, and now it’s time to attend to your mind. Allow yourself to get lost in a good book or a movie for a few hours without paying any mind to your phone, work, or to-do list.
We are loving Reese’s Book Club pick Lucky by Canadian author, Marissa Stapley. Or transport yourself to Provence with one of Peter Mayle’s novels set in the stunning region. Pour yourself a (generous) glass of wine, and light a candle to finish off your evening, breathing in the warmth and aroma of nature itself.
When you’re all finished, give yourself a five-star review for making time to care for your body and your mind.

]]>A tea towel is used to clean up spills, dry surfaces, and tidy spaces. But unlike a regular towel or napkin that does the same, tea towels are more durable than a napkin and thinner than a bath towel. They also tend to be much softer. Tea towels are typically made from linen, cotton, or a combination of both.
A tea towel may also be called a dish towel or even a glass towel. A glass towel is ultrasoft in order to, as the name suggests, clean glass without leaving any markings.
But most importantly, tea towels are a much more aesthetic piece than a regular rag. They are woven or printed with designs that are as much decorative as they are functional. A tea towel can become a statement piece in a kitchen by adding a touch of personality or style.
While towels or rags have been used in some form to wipe surfaces or dry dishes around the world, tea towels themselves became a symbol of status in Victorian England during the 18th century. As access to textiles increased across the nation, linen became a popular fabric in upper class households to dry crystal and fine China dishes. Linen, a fabric derived from linseed plants, prevented dishes and cups from being scratched, and kept them lint-free.
These tea towels also became an opportunity for a lady to display her creative skills. Women would often hand-embroider their own tea towels, which were then displayed during teatime across a serving tray or wrapped around a hot teapot. These beautiful textiles would then become family heirlooms and be passed down for future generations. You can thrift for an adorable vintage tea towel even today.
Tea towels also served an equally decorative and functional purpose in America during the 20th century. During the Great Depression, many families repurposed their flower sacks into tea towels by cutting them up into strips.
Flour makers quickly noticed this trend and began to create their own unique designs on their flour sacks. Thus began a new desire for printed tea towels. This new technique is still in use today as printed tea towels remain extremely popular especially for custom gifts.
Tea towels today
Tea towels continue to be popular both for their design and versatility. Did you know Vincent Van Gogh created several paintings on tea towels when he ran out of canvas? In fact, a painting of flowers Van Gogh created on a red and white striped tea towel sold for millions of dollars today. Talk about versatile!
While we each have an individual preference for cotton or linen tea towels, there’s no doubt the tea towel is an essential staple for any kitchen. Plus, when your tea towel is at the end of its life cycle, you can cut the towel up to use as a rag for cleaning the grimier parts of the house. Nothing says eco-friendly like reusing a beloved design for many years.
What kind of tea towel do you prefer? We’d love to hear from you.

King Louis XIV, also known as the ‘Sun King,’ was the longest reigning French monarch in history. He is well-known for his affinity for Versailles palace. He relocated the French aristocracy and government itself to Versailles and embarked on many building projects to expand the estate. Louis XIV was also nicknamed le doux fleurant or the ‘sweet flowery one.’
Despite the splendor of Versailles, it was a strange smelling place. People didn’t think of hygiene in the same way we do today. Even wealthy aristocrats only bathed occasionally. Most believed that water opened up your pores, which made you more vulnerable to infectious diseases. In order to combat all of the less pleasant bodily odours of palace residents, perfume became incredibly popular.
Louis was so passionate about perfumery that he commissioned his perfumer to create a new scent for every day of the week. He also favoured perfumes for aesthetic and medicinal purposes. One of Louis’ doctors created a scent dispersal system called the ‘cassolette’ to help alleviate ‘bad air.’
Want to try a scent inspired by the Sun King? Towards the end of his life, it is rumored the only scent the King could tolerate after so many years of excess was orange blossom. Wash up like a king with the Lothantique Orange Blossom soap. This French-milled soap is moisturizing and great for any skin type. Plus, it leaves your skin delicately scents like Louis would have loved.
During the reign of King Louis XV, the great grandson of the Sun King, perfumes were in even higher demand. In fact, his court became known as la cour parfumée or the ‘perfumed court.’ Louis supposedly required a different scent for every room at Versailles and scents to flow in every fountain. He appointed the first royal perfumer, Jean Fargeon, to meet his fragrant needs.
The king was also very passionate about horses. He commissioned his perfumer to create unique scents to celebrate his favourite horses. Meanwhile, the King’s famous mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour, had a yearly budget of 500 livres for perfumes (the equivalent of 63,500 American dollars today).
A painting for the Marquise, ‘Pot-Pourri de Pompadour,’ depicts a Chinese porcelain jar, which she loved, filled with coriander, mint, rosemary, lemon, orris root and more. Scent your home inspired by the palace of Versailles with the Christian Tortu Citrus Garden Pot-Pourri. The beautiful decorative crystals have notes of bergamot, pine, cedar, mint, and musk.
Or follow Louis’ lead and use a unique scent for each room in your home with one of our fragrance diffusers or room sprays. Create your own ‘perfumed court’ with dozens of stunning scents to choose from.
Perhaps one of the most famous French figures in history, Marie-Antoinette was married to King XVI. The queen was known for her decadent lifestyle and later execution by French revolutionaries. While she likely never said the iconic ‘let them eat cake’ that is attributed to her, she did have a passion for entertaining, aesthetics, and she was known for her refined tastes. She had a budget of 258,000 livres (3.2 million USD) for her wardrobe alone, which led many to nickname her Madame Déficit.
Luxury perfumes also reached a peak under Louis XVI. During this period, perfumery became officially divorced from medicine and held as an art form in and of itself. The queen’s favourite perfumers included Jean-Louis Fargeon and Jean-François Houbigant. She was particularly fond of roses. Fargeon created for her the Parfum du Trianon. The dominant note was roses, but it also contained orange blossom, lavender, musk, and a touch of vanilla to reference her Austrian childhood.
In contrast to Marie-Antionette’s lavish lifestyle, she was said to have romanticized simple country living. She enjoyed lighter floral scents, fresh grasses, and wood smells. Explore our popular Chemin de Roses collection that would have fit perfectly with the queen’s favoured aesthetics with notes of rose, amber and musk in each product.
What scents remind you of royalty? We’d love to hear from you.
